Biography

About

Dr Peter Mickan directs the postgraduate program in Applied Linguistics in the Discipline of Linguistics at the University of Adelaide. He supervises a postgraduate research group investigating socialisation and language practices in education. He has published papers on language learning and socialisation, IELTS assessment, CALL and bilingual education. His recent book, Social practices, pedagogy and language use: studies in socialisation, co-edited with I Petrescu and J Timoney (Lythrum Press, Adelaide) frames language learning as a process of socialisation into the social semiotics of communities of practice. His research interests encompass language learning and teaching, text-based curriculum design and language assessment. He is directing projects on socialisation in New Arrivals' classes, IELTS preparation and Indigenous language teacher training.

Dr Peter Mickan coordinates the postgraduate Applied Linguistics program in the Discipline of Linguistics at the University of Adelaide. He specialises in teaching language and learning, curriculum design, languages pedagogy, and language use for specific purposes. He bases current research projects in: IELTS assessment; academic literacies; curriculum design; and language revival on social theory and language as a social semiotic. He supervises a research group of doctoral and masters students exploring applications of social theory to language proficiency assessment, to bilingual upbringing of children, to development of academic literacies and to ESL instruction.
